This study aimed to examine thematization in the Persian and English translations of the thirtieth part of the Quran, based on Halliday’s metafunction in Systemic Functional Grammar. The focus was on how marked themes were transferred and how thematic foregrounding in the revelatory text was represented in the translations of Mohammad-Mehdi Fooladvand and John Arthur Arberry. Using a descriptive-analytic method and a contrastive approach, the study purposively selected and analyzed 18 verses. The selection criterion was the presence of marked initial constructions in the Arabic text, including fronted objects, emphatic and restrictive structures, and preposed nominal or adverbial structures. The data were examined according to Halliday’s model and Jorjani’s order. Findings showed that Arberry fully preserved initial constructions and their foregrounding function in 10 cases, preserved them partially in 6 cases, and failed to preserve them in 2 cases. In Fooladvand’s translation, 3 cases showed full preservation, 10 partial preservation, and 5 non-preservation. The difference in results cannot be attributed to the structure of the two languages, because Fooladvand’s interpretive strategy and Arberry’s formalist approach affected the representation of these constructions. Quran translation requires functional equivalence, because neglecting thematization can weaken implications such as restriction, warning, and certainty, significantly overall.
