Reading constitutes a fundamental skill, with text comprehension as its ultimate goal. Among the critical components underlying reading comprehension is the ability to make inferences. This quantitative study was conducted to investigate the differences between first and second cycle secondary school students in terms of inference skills. For this purpose, a sample of 80 male students in two weak and two strong groups from public schools in Some'esarā City was selected using convenience sampling and participated in an inference-making test. The scores of the individuals in terms of two types of inference, coherence and elaborative, were analyzed using two independent samples t-tests and Mann-Whitney U-tests. The results showed that strong students in both levels were more capable than weak students in terms of both types of inference. Strong second cycle students performed significantly better in elaborative inference than strong first cycle students. Also, weak second cycle students performed significantly better than weak first cycle students in coherence inference. The implications of these findings are discussed.
